IT Asset Disposal FAQ

What happens differently with SSDs compared to traditional hard drives when it comes to secure data destruction?

Short answer: SSDs store data electronically rather than magnetically, which means degaussing (effective on magnetic hard drives) simply doesn't work on them at all — secure destruction of an SSD requires either software-based secure erase commands specifically designed for flash storage, or physical destruction, since SSDs also distribute data differently across memory cells in ways that can make simple overwriting less straightforward than with a traditional hard drive.

Why degaussing doesn’t apply to SSDs

Degaussing works by disrupting the magnetic charges that store data on a traditional hard drive’s spinning platters — an SSD has no magnetic storage at all, so this method has no effect on it whatsoever, despite sometimes being assumed to be a universal solution.

Why SSD wiping is more complex

SSDs use wear-levelling technology that spreads data across memory cells in ways a simple overwrite command doesn’t always fully address — this is why SSD manufacturers provide specific “secure erase” commands designed to properly clear all cells, including areas a standard overwrite might miss.

What this means practically

Make sure whoever is handling your data destruction knows the drive type and uses the appropriate method — treating an SSD the same as a magnetic hard drive can leave data more recoverable than you’d expect.

How ScrapTrade Makes This Easier

ScrapTrade’s ITAD-experienced buyers understand this distinction and apply the right method per drive type, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.
