IT Asset Disposal FAQ

What's the difference between data wiping, degaussing, and physical destruction for laptop drives?

Short answer: Data wiping uses software to overwrite existing data multiple times, leaving the drive intact and reusable; degaussing uses a powerful magnetic field to scramble data on magnetic hard drives (but doesn't work on SSDs and destroys the drive's usability); physical destruction (shredding or crushing) physically destroys the storage medium entirely — each offers a different balance of certainty, drive reusability, and applicability to the specific drive type.

Data wiping

Software-based wiping overwrites every sector of a drive, often multiple times, to a level considered unrecoverable — the advantage is the drive remains physically intact and potentially reusable or resellable afterward.

Degaussing

This exposes a magnetic hard drive to a powerful magnetic field that scrambles the stored data at a physical level — effective and thorough for magnetic media, but it renders the drive permanently unusable, and critically, it does not work on SSDs, which don’t store data magnetically.

Physical destruction

Shredding or crushing the drive is the most certain method, physically destroying the storage medium so no data recovery is possible regardless of drive type — the tradeoff is the drive has zero further resale or reuse value.
